Search for South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board members begins

Parliament is now beginning the search for new South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board members to steer the public broadcaster out of its problems. This process follows shortly after the appointment of a five-member interim board.

The Portfolio Committee on Communications has invited the public to make nominations for the appointment of the new SABC Board.

The 12 non-executive board members must be qualified, have expertise and experience in the fields of broadcasting policy and technology, broadcasting regulation, media law, business practice and finance, journalism, entertainment and education and labour issues.

They must also be committed to fairness, freedom of expression, the right of the public to be informed as well as openness and accountability. Board members must represent a broad cross-section of the population of the Republic of South Africa. The closing date for nominations is July 31.

Committee Chairperson Mr Ismail Vadi said the Committee will short-list candidates, conduct interviews and present its findings to the National Assembly for recommendation to the President.
