SCOPA worried about 2012 audit outcomes for municipalities

The North West Provincial Legislature’s Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (SCOPA) has noted with great concern that municipalities in the province might not get a clean audit outcome by 2014.

This came after the Provincial Auditor General (AG)’s office presented a worrying picture of the 2012 audit outcomes.

The AG’s office said the municipalities cannot continue to get repeat findings (repetitive) since 1995 up to now, therefore the Committee believes that the political leadership in the municipalities should take charge on oversight and accountability.

“Municipalities should ensure that they feel vacant positions with skilled people and must capacitate municipal officials with necessary skills.

“We call upon Municipal Public Accounts Committees to start doing a vigorous oversight over municipal executives and management. They should also hold public hearings on oversight and accountability,” said Chairperson of SCOPA, Hon Hlomane Chauke.
