SCOPA Meets Stakeholders to Strategise for Accountability in Municipalities

On Wednesday, 19 September 2012, the North West Provincial Legislature’s Standing Committee on Provincial Public Accounts (SCOPA) will be meeting stakeholders to strategise on oversight, accountability and to strategise on action to be taken against those who misused taxpayers’ monies.

The meeting will be held at Mmabatho Palms at 09h00 and it will be attended by Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPACs); Auditor General’s office (AG); a representative from the Public Protector; Crime Intelligence (Hawks); the South African Local Government Association (SALGA); the Department of Local Government and the Department of Finance.

SCOPA Chairperson, Hon. Hlomane Chauke said this comes as a Committee’s intervention after the provincial Auditor General’s (AG) office painted a worrying picture on the performance of the North West municipalities in the Audit Outcomes of the 2010/2011 financial year, during a presentation that was done before the Committee.

“The meeting will have to come up with strategies that will curb wasteful, unauthorised and fruitless expenditures. MPACs will also be work shopped on how to spot deviance from proper procurement processes.

“We also want to come up with systems that will ensure accountability and recovery of taxpayers’ monies from those who committed fraud, said Hon. Chauke.

Members of the media are invited to attend the meeting.
