Deputy Minister concludes his visits to schools in two provinces

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Advocate Michael Masutha concluded his visit to two provinces, North West and Limpopo yesterday, 22 January where he promoted mathematics and science. His last stops included Risenga and Ngonyama high schools in Giyani where pupils promised to consider pursuing careers in the mathematics and science fields.

In his address, Deputy Minister said urged parents and teachers to work collectively in ensuring that pupils receive the best education. South Africa is under pressure to produce much-needed science and technology skills for research and development purposes and the number of Grade 12 graduates in mathematics and physical science is crucial in achieving this.

The 2013 matric pass rate in mathematics and physical science showed a slight increase compared to 2012. The maths pass rate for the matric class of 2013 increased from 54% in 2012 to 59.1% and in physical science from 61.3% to 67%. However, a much higher pass rate is needed if South Africa is to improve its global economic competitiveness.

Earlier in the week, the Deputy Minister addressed school pupils at the Science centre the Bokamoso Science and Technology centre in Bochum. He said South Africa is a developing country, and for it to be considered developed it needs you (learners) to do Maths & Science and become scientists and researchers. The country has a lot of natural resources such as minerals.

However, the most important resources are yourselves young people. “SA will not win the war against all these adverse conditions if it didn't produce more of scientists, mathematicians and researchers. Please prosper in your studies wherever you will be, but do come back to develop rural villages like yours, “he said.
