School uniform distribution for underprivileged learners continues

Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development Ntombi Mekgwe, showered learners at Dowlinglaan Primary School and Diepsloot secondary school with 250 school uniform packs on their second day of schooling this year.

This initiative is part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Bana Pele project, which is aimed at poverty alleviation. It also encourages the learners to study and to enjoy their school days. Above all, the project seeks to give children a head start in life, as it forms part of a comprehensive basket of services needed by children for their emotional, cognitive and physical development. The project aims to reach 100 000 vulnerable learners with school uniform by the end of January this year.

Addressing learners at Dowlinglaan in Westbury Johannesburg this morning, MEC Ntombi Mekgwe wished learners well for the year ahead, and encouraged them to attend school regularly. She said, “If you focus on your education and studying hard you will acquire skills and expertise essential for the modern economy and you will be able to play a constructive role in society”

While visiting learners at Diepsloot West Secondary School MEC Mekgwe warned learners that peer pressure can lead to failure in life. She further encouraged them to respect each other, and most importantly to respect their teachers as they play an important role in their lives. The marathon for the school uniform project will continue in the province throughout the month of January.
