Scam alert - Schools' cheques used in fraudulent transactions

It has come to the attention of the Mpumalanga Department of Education that there had been reported cases of fraudulent transactions that occurred in schools within the Bohlabela District.

The schools affected allege that a significant number of their cheques were cashed at various branches of a particular bank while the schools are still in possession of the original blank cheques which bear the same serial numbers as the processed cheques. It is suspected that the fraudsters clone the checks and thereafter deposit them.

The Department seeks to alert all principals to remain vigilant at all times and ensure that their cheque books and privileged information is kept in a safe place and that only authorized personnel have access to it.

Schools are also requested to report any suspected illegal transactions to the nearest police station.
