The festive season operation, Duty Calls was officially launched this past week by the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa and the National Commissioner of Police, General Bheki Cele.
When Duty Calls has proven to be very successful during the 2010/2011 festive period. To further enhance our capacity police our police men and women have been informed that they will not be permitted vacation leave at least until mid January 2012.
Police officers in uniform will be on patrol on foot, in vehicles, even on horses, bicycles and motor bikes with maximum air support provided to ensure highest visibility of police officers possible during our operations. Operations primarily will focus on combating serious and contact crimes as priority but a zero tolerance approach will be adopted throughout.
“I have asked that members not be granted leave during this period so that people of South Africa can be safe and feel safe during the festive season”, said General Bheki Cele. “I will be visiting all areas as I have done in the previous two years to provide physical and moral support to our men and women in blue because if they must work, then I must work. We do not just say the “the SAPS, our family”, we show it”, added General Cele.
During his address to a crowded Thokoza Stadium, the General further demonstrated his commitment to ensuring the safety of the people to such an extent that he provided his cellular phone number to all present.
He further promised, as part of the SAPS top management’s commitment to fighting crime, to provide the cellular phone numbers to the media and communities to call on provincial commissioners in the respective provinces should any person feel dissatisfied with the service in that particular province.
