The Provincial Commissioners of the SAPS from all nine provinces appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Police, deliberating on issues relating to the core business of fighting crime. The discussions were centered around the crime statistics of the previous reporting period and the financial year (2010/2011) respectively.
The call up follows provincial visits by the oversight body to some of the provinces where shortfalls, challenges and successes were identified by the committee.
Provincial Commissioners were afforded an opportunity to make presentation before the Portfolio Committee on the overall crime picture focussing on crime generators, crime hotspots, top performing stations, troublesome stations and in addition the sharing of best practices, interventions and strategies going forward.
The committee and SAPS Provincial Commissioners engaged in a robust discussion with a sole aim of proactively fighting crime, in ensuring that the people of South Africa are and feel safe. Concerns around the roll out of the rural safety strategy, sector policing and detective services were raised by the oversight body and SAPS presented plans to address the challenges accordingly. Turnaround strategies were also presented with the aim of improving performance.
The briefing to the portfolio committee comes after a police Top Management meeting in January, which dealt with crime fighting strategies, policing model and sharing of best practices aimed at improving the crime picture in the country, which has shown a significant decrease in the past two financial years respectively.
The proactive planning by SAPS management is yielding positive results and hurdles will be leaped over in order to contribute to the ongoing stability in the country.
