SAPS persist and rapists get life in jail

Two men were sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for rape by the East London East High court on Thursday, 10 May 2012.

Nkosinathi Booi (33) and Sinethemba Gwadi (23) were convicted of raping an 11 year old at Fort Grey Informal settlement on 27 February 2010. They were arrested by Constable Ntombizanele Njokwana of East London Family Violence, Child protection and Sexual Offences Unit. She successfully investigated a very difficult case  involving a minor and is praised for her sterling work.

In another case that was finalised earlier this month two accused aged 18 and 19 were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mdantsane High court where they were convicted on two counts, namely burglary, theft and rape under aggravating circumstances. The court heard how  Minentle Mgudlwana (19) and Mandilakhe Tuyuyu Yekani (18) entered the house of the victim, a 54 year old woman from Kiwane location, Chalumna. The victim, who was left for dead, was found by two men who happened to pass by her house. They, along with other members of the community pursued the men but were only able to recover the stolen items.  They were however later arrested by Constable Kanzi and have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The East London High Court sentenced a 22 year old man to 8 years imprisonment for the rape of a 26 year old  mentally-ill woman in Scenery Park, Duncan Village. A neighbour who happened to be the  suspect’s girl friend arrived to drop her child and witnessed the rape. The man was arrested by Constable Kanzi in 2007 and sentenced in April of this year.

These successes form part of a number achievements by the East London Family Violence, Child protection and Sexual crimes Unit.

East London Police Cluster Commander Major General Sandile Hloba praised the members for a job well done and said “these convictions should send a clear message to criminals out there that police will persist in their investigations in an effort to secure the removal of criminals from society”
