This afternoon, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Primedia Group renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was initially entered into in 2007. The renewal was signed at a ceremony launching the 35th Crime Stoppers International Conference which will be jointly hosted by the SAPS and Crime Line in October 2014 in Cape Town.
This MOU will allow the two entities to continue to work very closely with one another, as well as with the communities that we both serve. Crime Line receives tip-offs on crime and criminal activities from members of the public which are then sent through to the SAPS’s Crime Stop to allow for action and follow-up by the SAPS. The SAPS Crime Stop office also receives tip-offs from the community through telephone calls received by experienced call operators. These initiatives have been resoundingly successful in tackling criminality in our communities.
As a direct result of tip-offs received via Crime Line and Crime Stop, between 2007 and 2014, 3 280 people have been arrested and over R56 million worth of illegal or unlawfully-obtained property and goods have been seized.
In addition, as a result of the Drug Watch campaign conducted in Gauteng and the Western Cape, close on 30 000 people were taken into custody and, under the electricity theft campaign, Operation Khanyisa, 2 829 Eskom cases have been solved.
Hosting the 35th Crime Stoppers International Conference is an exciting joint venture between the SAPS and Crime Line and, together, we are working towards making it the most memorable and educational to date. Crime Stoppers International will hold their annual gathering in a country on the African continent for the first time in 2014. Our law enforcement officers will be able to learn, to teach, to network and to share with local and international experts and other delegates.
At the ceremony today, SAPS National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Primedia CEO Mr Roger Jardine urged whistle blowers to continue reporting all criminal activity in their communities to the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 and the Crime Line SMS number 32211.
