In its endeavour to revive and strengthen the South African Network for Women in Transportation (SANWIT), the Eastern Cape Department of Transport Special Programmmes Unit started with its District SANWIT consultative sessions recently.
These sessions which commenced at theJoe Gqabi and Chris Hani Districts on 29 and 30 May 2012 respectively are a response to MEC Marawu's announcement she made during her 2012/13 Policy Speech presentation at the Provincial Legislature earlier this year, where she called upon the Department to hold interactive and informing SANWIT Summits through-out the districts.
They are intended to enhance SANWIT in the province through district summits which will culminate in a provincial conference to be held in August 2012 to elect new leadership.
Speaking at the Chris Hani District session Chairperson Ms Mlandu urged the women in and around the district to be goal oriented and to take SANWIT as an opportunity to empower women and revamp their desires to boost the economy of the Country
SANWIT is an association of women that seeks to provide a forum for the exploration of technical, policy, financial, and political aspects of emerging transportation issues in virtually every sector, while affording women outstanding networking opportunities and inside exposure in the country’s latest transportation mega projects.
It is a structure that supports the idea of strengthening the role of women in transport and is aimed at recruiting women or women groups as members and co-ordinate them into an umbrella body.
