After seeing the plight of the students in Mountfrere and surrounding areas, Chief Madzikane the second took it upon himself to rally the sponsors for the exhibition to guide students towards making good decisions when it comes to their education.
According to Mountfrere District Director Malusi Sobikela, the exhibition started last year and will run for three years. "This is our second year and we are thankful to the Chief and SANDF for being committed to this initiative as it is important for our learners to have guidance and avoid confusion when it comes to choosing their career paths" added Sobikela.
According to Kennel Nkumanda this career exhibition is mainly conducted by the SANDF, and aimed at exposing these students to career opportunities within the force. "There are so many careers within the force which students are not aware of, and we are here to present these opportunities to them as such will help them choose what they want to become when they grow up or when they leave school" said Nkumanda.
He also encouraged learners to be focused, disciplined and responsible. "Learners please leave politics to politicians, leave drugs to fools and think about the change you can bring to your homes, Province and the whole of South Africa", Nkumanda told the learners who were listening attentively.
Chief Madzikane the second firmly encouraged students to be proud of who they are and keeping their traditions alive. "I assure you that if you keep your background and discipline in check you will go far in life and that will surely guarantee your success" said the chief adding that with perseverance and hard work anything is possible.
Speaking on behalf of the Nedbank Foundation, branch manager Iphendule Nkukhwana urged students to stop complaining about their situations but 'do something about them and share the limited resources they have and make a better life for themselves and their communities'.
Students were taken for classes by the SANDF team and taught how to operate air-crafts and the excitement was written in their faces as they interact with SANDF members. SANDF showcased their air-crafts to the amazement of the students and teachers who could not believe their eyes when the air-crafts were flipping in the mid air.
Although the exhibition started on a high note with high attendance of students and teachers, the weather proved to be a challenge as the numbers of attendance dropped as the week progressed. This forced the organisers to cancel the exhibition on Wednesday due to poor attendance.
SANDF career exhibition brings excitement to Mount Frere
The South African Nation Defence Force (SANDF), Mountfrere District Education, Umzimvubu Local Municipality, Nedbank foundation, Old Mutual group and other sponsors together with the local Chief organised a week long career exhibition for students in Mountfrere Sports ground in the past week.
