SALGA sends condolences on the passing of Auditor General Kimi Makwetu

SALGA mourns the passing of Auditor General Kimi Makwetu

It is with deep sadness that Cllr. Thembi Nkadimeng, President of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the national executive committee (NEC) of SALGA, have learned that Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, 11 November 2020.

Makwetu, who passed away in hospital, had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2018, and SALGA expresses its sincere sympathies to his wife, children and entire family for the devastating loss. SALGA also conveys its deepest condolences to Makwetu’s colleagues at the Office of the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) for the loss of a consummate professional.

30 November 2020 would have marked the completion of Makwetu’s seven-year term of office as South Africa's Auditor-General, and it has been an honour and privilege for SALGA to have witnessed his energy and devotion to a profession that’s at the core of public financial accountability in this beloved country.

It was also announced earlier this month that he had been appointed to the United Nations (UN) Independent Audit Advisory Committee (IAAC).

Since his appointment as Auditor-General on 1 December 2013, Makwetu’s leadership in South Africa's supreme audit institution has been exemplary and his stewardship of this highly respected Office propelled it to even greater heights.

SALGA therefore joins the nation in mourning the loss of a strong pillar of the auditing profession.

He will forever remain in our hearts and memories.
