Safety, Security and Liaison department awards bursaries to learners

Mpumalanga Department of Safety, Security and Liaison Acting Head, Ms Nontsundu Ndonga has awarded bursaries worth over R120 000 to four learners. Two of these learners benefitted in the 2009/10 financial year and the other two in the current financial year (2010/11).

Ndonga was speaking in Nelspruit shortly before the learners left for their respective learning institutions.

Ndonga said that the learners, who are currently studying at the universities of North West, Limpopo and South Africa (Unisa) have mainly been drawn from previously disadvantaged communities and whose parents cannot afford to send them to institutions of higher learning.

“The department believes that these learners, upon the completion of their studies, will assist in addressing some of the challenges related to the Criminal Justice System as they have registered for courses such as Criminal Psychology, Criminology, Law and Sociology among others,” explained Ndonga.

Ndonga said these learners will be given first preference when the internship and experiential learning opportunities arise in the department in order to prepare them for the labour market once they have completed their studies.

She said preference was obviously given to the learners residing within Mpumalanga province as part of addressing skills shortage especially with regard to legal and criminal justice fields.

The bursaries are expected to cover registration and tuition fees, meals and accommodation as well as prescribed text books up to R6 000 per learner per academic year.

“We will continue supporting learners especially from disadvantaged communities in particular those who show potential but their parents do not have the financial means to attend institutions of higher learning,” concluded Ndonga.
