Safety on our roads a priority - Mohono

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono, has urged the people of the North West to use the Easter holidays to demonstrate their commitment to building a nation that respects human life and the rules of the road.

Mohono said that all road users have a responsibility to reduce the carnage on the roads and to prevent unnecessary loss of lives. “I wish to remind all our road users that reckless driving, speed, fatigue and drunken driving are killers on our roads,” said Mohono.

She reminded road users about the dangers of driver fatigue. In this regard, she urged drivers to rest at regular intervals when they undertake long distance trips.

Mohono said that law-enforcement officers will be in force to ensure the safety of all road users. Those who violate traffic rules and put the lives of fellow road users at risk will face the full might of the law.

Our law enforcement agencies will, among other things, focus on the following:

  • Driver fitness, vehicle roadworthiness, alcohol and substance abuse
  • Pedestrian Safety particularly pedestrian jay-walking, drinking and walking
  • Violations such as crossing barrier lines, red light infringements, use of cell phones while driving, exceeding the speed limit, use of seatbelts, safe following distances, inconsiderate driving, reckless and negligent driving.

Mohono wished the people of the North West and all public servants a happy and peaceful Easter period.

Mohono encouraged all citizens of the North West to do their patriotic duty by voting in the forthcoming local government elections which will take place on 18 May 2011. She said by voting, the people of the North West would be contributing towards advancing the goals of our democracy and consolidating the reconstruction and development agenda of our country.
