Rural Girls Games

The lives of communities of Xhariep District, and the entire Free State, continue to change as various programmes continue to be rolled-out by the Free State Provincial Government. The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will continue with its programme of ensuring greater participation in sport and recreation by these communities.

Rural Girls Games: “Tshameka Mosetsana!”

250 young girls from farm boarding schools within the Xhariep district will have their lives positively impacted upon as they engage in the Rural Girls Games this weekend. With the schools just closed engaging young people in sport and recreation will be one of the key programmes of the Free State Provincial Government.

The Rural Girls Games will be staged at Caleb Motshabi Stadium in Trompsburg from 09:00 on 25 June 2011 under the theme “Tshameka Mosetsana”. The purpose of the games is to mobilise more girls from rural areas to participate in Sport and Recreation; to promote positive social, economic and health values through sport; to promote the importance of education among young girls through career guidance education and to introduce young girls to the main stream of sport.

The programme will entail the following sport and recreational elements, amongst others:

  • Big walk: From Caleb Motshabi stadium around the township then back to Caleb Motshabi stadium
  • Youth camp: to conscientise young people about their cultural heritage and its importance in their communities
  • Playing of different sport codes: Netball, Volleyball, Chess, and Indigenous Games.

Handover of Multipurpose Sport Court:

The impact of sport and recreation programmes will further be felt in the Xhariep district with the handover of a Multipurpose Sport Court to the community of Luckhoff on 25 June 2011 from 11h00. This is the third Multipurpose Sport Court to be handed-over by the Department during this financial year, the first being at Vredefort (4 June 2011) and the second at Heilbron (11 June 2011) and third at Petrus Steyn (18 June 2011). During his 2011/12 budget vote speech the MEC announced the building of five (5) of the Multi-Purpose Sport Courts in Van Stadensrus, Petrus Steyn, Luckhoff, Vredefort and Heilbron, with three (3) more others being rolled out to Diyatalawa, Makgolokweng and Tweeling at a later stage.

These sport facilities allow for a number of different sporting codes to be played simultaneously on the same platform or field. “The building of these sport facilities paves the way for our vision of encouraging all people in our communities to actively take part in different sport and recreational activities,” stated the MEC.
