Rural Development and Land Reform Deputy Minister Thulas Nxesi on Prof Kader Asmal.
As General Secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers Union I had the privilege of working alongside Comrade Kader Asmal during his time as Minister of Education.
He brought to the portfolio the knowledge and passion of a trained teacher, and listened to teachers - beginning the process of curriculum review – when they complained that the curriculum was over-complicated. He brought a special focus to the importance of ethics, values and a sense of history in the curriculum.
More recently, as part of Rural Development and Land Reform, I was aware of his work in assisting vulnerable farm dwellers to access legal services – a champion of human rights to the end.
