In light of the current snowfalls that some parts of the country are experiencing, the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) advises the public to observe precautionary measures put in place by municipal emergency services.
People travelling by road to various destinations in the Eastern Cape and Free State need to take note that several roads in these provinces have been closed to the public due to snow fall.
The following roads are either closed or being cleared by relevant authorities:
- Queenstown Area, N6 between Queenstown and Jamestown closed
- Penhoek Pass Closed
- Queenstown, Tarkastad snowing but not closed
- Queenstown, Dordrecht road snowing, road closed
- Dordrecht near Kimber Bridge closed
- R56 Between Cala and Elliot closed
- R67 Fort Beaufort, Seymour and Cathcart Closed yesterday but the snow has been removed and the road has been opened today.
- Heavy snow in Keiskammahoek Pass and the road has been opened today.
- On R72 between Kenton on Sea, Alexandria road very wet and full of water
- Wapadsberg and Lootsberg passes snowing but open, can be closed soon if conditions worsen
- On N10 from Middelburg to Bloemfontein all roads closed
- R63 between Graaff-Reinet and Murraysburg, road closed due to heavy snow
- N10 between Middelburg and Colesberg, road closed due to snow
- N9 between Middelburg and De Aar, road closed due to snow.
- R61 between Cradock and Queenstown, road closed due to snow
- R61 between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet road closed due to snow.
- N2 between Mt Ayliff and Kokstad, snowy and road closed – about 20 trucks and three buses trapped.
- T15 Road between Mandileni and Mr Frere closed - vehicles and buses trapped at Jijini area.
- R58 between Ngcobo and Elliot, road closed due to snow and there have fallen trees in Ngcobo.
- N2 between Upper Tsolo and Mt Frere snowy but road not closed.
The NDMC is awaiting details of road closures in KwaZulu-Natal.
