North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa appeals to all roads users who will be travelling along the Kuruman-Vryburg, Bessiesvlei-Ventersdorp, Vryburg-Mahikeng, Mahikeng-Ramatlabama, roads to give right of way to convoys of armies of Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries that are to pass through the respective areas over the next few days starting from Thursday morning.
The armies from Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Botswana are to exit the country through Ramatlabama Border Post, while Zimbambwe, Mozambique and Malawi are expected to exit the country through Beit Bridge Border post. The respective armies had been attending Golfino joint forces military training exercise at South African National Defence Force’s Lohatlha Training Centre in Kuruman.
In order to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of road users during the passage of the armies, MEC Yawa urges all parties that will be travelling along the identified routes to exercise patience. Motorists are requested to observe safe following distances from the respective convoys of about 20 military vehicles and to observe safe following distances.
The plan that the Border Control Operational Co-ordinating Committee implemented when the armies entered the country to assist their immigration and custom processes will also be put into action at the respective ports of entries to avoid congestion.
