Road Safety Regulator releases preliminary report on Booysens accident

The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) conducted an investigation into the circumstances that led to a rear-end collision between two Metrorail trains travelling towards the South of Johannesburg on Friday, 17 July 2015 at approximately.

Integrity tests were conducted on the primary signalling systems between Kazerne to New Canada and Naledi to JHB (Park Station). Following the tests, the prohibition directive on the three parallel lines we lifted this morning. However, the Karzerne to New Canada line, where the accident occurred, remains closed.

The Regulator has instructed the Operator to increase maintenance intervals on all the primary signalling systems with immediate effect.

Furthermore, the RSR will also conduct an independent Board of Inquiry to establish the root cause as well as to produce a report with findings and recommendations.

As the Regulator of railway safety, the RSR promotes rail safety and works tirelessly to achieve Zero Occurrences.

The Preliminary Investigation Report on Booysens is attached.
