Road safety and scholar patrol project launched

With this year’s October Transport Month (OTM) themed ‘Safety in all modes of Transport: System readiness for 2010, Sisonke siyaphambili akujiki’, MEC Nkosi and members of the school governing body of Lekgotla Primary School officially launched the Road Safety and Scholar Patrol project on 16 October 2009 in Mamelodi, Tshwane.

The project’s objectives included the promotion and instilling of road safety in the minds of learners as well as other road users particularly in and around schools. The project will also help learners to improve road safety and ensure everyone is responsible for preventing accidents and saving of lives. Through this project, learners are to be taught to be vigilant at all times and abide by the rules of the road.

In his keynote address, MEC Nkosi highlighted the need to produce better drivers and encouraged the schools to formulate scholar patrol teams in order to improve safety around them. He also highlighted the necessity of programmes like Child in traffic and scholar patrol and integration to be included into the school curriculum to educate learners from young age and empower them with knowledge around road safety.

The MEC further persuaded community members and parents to be actively involved with the project. This year’s campaign was launched primarily to identify obstacles with regard to road safety, dealing with them and to improve the safety of all commuters in all modes of transport.
