Road rail safety campaign beefed up in Rustenburg

North West Traffic Management Authority, jointly with other stakeholders recently booted the Arrive Alive campaign when they launched the festive rail and road traffic safety campaign in Rustenburg. Mining Giants Anglo platinum, Transnet and other law enforcement agencies joined forces in creating awareness around the Rustenburg area focusing more especially on the railway crossing point.

According to Transnet officials there has been a number of accidents on the railway crossing points and that also contributes to the ever increasing number of accidents on provincial roads. Transnet officer Gugu Majozi, confirmed that they have already recorded about 11 accidents on the railway crossing since April this year. “The campaign will assist greatly in ensuring that we create awareness among motorist in Rustenburg especially Mine tracks transporting goods from in and out of the city”, she said.

Transnet analysis of these accidents shows that they are attributed to inconsiderate and reckless driver behaviour, failure to stop and illegal crossing at level crossings.

Meanwhile MEC for Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison hailed the partnership with other stakeholders, saying it will assist in the drastic reduction of road accidents especially during the festive period.

Our aim as government is to make sure that our roads are safe. Therefore the inclusion of other stakeholders like business, and other law enforcement agencies really gives us hope that our call is heard and we now have hope that we shall win the battle, to make our roads accident free”, said Maloyi.
