During the 2010 Easter weekend, 13 people lost their lives as a result of road accidents. Of the 13 fatalities, eight were pedestrians, two were passengers and three were drivers. The twelve fatal crashes in which the 13 people died were caused by unsafe overtaking, pedestrian jaywalking, tyre burst and over speeding.
On Thursday, a driver lost his life following a head-on collision on the Stella-Vryburg road, while the other driver was seriously injured. On Friday, a female passenger died after a taxi in which she was travelling was sideswiped by another vehicle on the Rustenburg-Thabazimbi road. On the same day, a driver believed to be a Botswana national died after a head-on collision on the Brits-Rosslyn road.
On Monday, a passenger died following a tyre burst on the Christiana road. In another accident, a driver of a bus was killed in an accident on the Moruleng road. The cause of this accident is not yet known.
The department has reiterated its call to all road users to help reduce the carnage on the roads. We urge all people to respect the rules of the road and to respect fellow road users. Over the years, the province has witnessed unnecessary loss of lives as a result of reckless driving, over-speeding, drunken driving, unroadworthy vehicles, as well as other forms of unacceptable behaviour on the roads.
The department wishes to remind the people of the North West that the law-enforcement agencies will remain in full force to ensure the safety of all road users. Those who violate traffic rules and put the lives of others in danger will face the full might of the law.
