Road Accident Fund to assist families of Vaal Dam crash victims

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) will provide assistance to the families of six people who died when the vehicle they were travelling in landed in the Vaal Dam in the Free State on Monday, 23 May night, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has announced.

"We want to convey our condolences to the families of those killed in this tragic incident," the Minister said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments. Officials from the Road Accident Fund have been dispatched to provide assistance to the affected families.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has also assigned an independent team of accident investigation and reconstruction specialists to assist in this culpable homicide investigation. During this Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 to 2020, we call upon all South Africans to strengthen the global movement that is demanding real action against road deaths, and save thousands of lives and billions of rands."

According to reports, an Opel Corsa Lite in which the six family members were travelling smashed through the railings on the bridge over the Vaal Dam at Oranjeville at about 19h00 on Monday, 23 May night and landed in the water. Yesterday, Wednesday, 25 May the car containing six bodies, was pulled out of the Vaal Dam. The victims were heading back to Vereeniging and Sebokeng after their grandmother's funeral at Tugela Ferry in KwaZulu-Natal when the accident happened.
