This weekend’s 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 3 149 vehicles stopped as part of the Western Cape Government’s Safely Home campaign.
One thousand one hundred and thirty six (1 136) drivers were screened for being under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, with 21 arrests bring made. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Laingsburg at 1,75mg/1000ml, which was more than 7 times the legal limit of 0,24mg/1000ml.
About 1 749 speeding offences were recorded and a total of 329 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness.
The highest speeds recorded over the weekend:
- 192km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 in Brackenfell
- 153 km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N1 in Worcester
- 123 km/h in a 70km/h zone on the N2 in Somerset west
- 103 km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N2 in Knysna
A total of 15 arrests were made over the weekend, for offences ranging from public transport permit violations to excessive speed and reckless and negligent driving.
While there are still individuals who think it is acceptable to get behind the wheel of a car while being seven times over the limit, they are being stopped before they can do any damage. Thankfully there were no fatalities on our roads and I would like to thank our traffic authorities for ensuring that our citizens arrived safely home this weekend.
