Results of Safely Home weekend traffic operations

As we are approaching another festive season we are very aware that with increased traffic on our roads comes the increased risk of fatalities and injuries.  Last week we launched an integrated Safely Home Road Safety Plan for the festive season with all programmes and initiatives in place to bolster resources, increase safety and combat reckless behaviour on our roads.

The weekend’s 24 alcohol blitz-roadblocks across the province saw 27 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a total of 1 038 were screened for being under suspicion of the offence. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Laingsburg at 1,54mg/1000ml.

A total of 2329 vehicles have been stopped at roadblocks.

241 speeding offences were recorded and a total of 326 fines have been issued. The highest speed of 175km/h in a 120km/h zone have been recorded on the N1 near Worcester.

Three men were arrested in separate instances for possessing dagga.

On the road between Clanwilliam and Lamberts Bay, a man lost his life after he lost control of his truck and overturned it. Another fatality was recorded when a delivery-vehicle overturned near Franskraal.
