Results of the municipal ward by-elections held on 17 September 2014

The African National Congress (ANC) has won 10 of the 11 wards contested in yesterday’s by-elections, with the remaining ward going to the Democratic Alliance (DA), the Electoral Commission (IEC) announced today.

The results saw changes of party representation in three wards:

  • From an independent candidate to the ANC in Ward 5 Tsolwana (Tarkastad) in the Eastern Cape
  • From the DA to the ANC in Ward 6 Tswaing (Delareyville), North West; and
  • From the ANC to the DA in Ward 7 Bitou (Greater Plettenberg Bay), Western Cape.

One ward, Ward 24 in the Greater Taung (Reivilo) Municipality in the North West, was uncontested, and in the remaining seven wards the ANC retained its representation.

Voter turnout varied between 29.35% and 72.43% with an average of 48.35%.

The new councillors in the two by-elections in the Eastern Cape are:

  • Gredwill Jerome van Heerden of the ANC in Ward 5 in the Tsolwana (Tarkastad) Municipality – EC132. The ward was previously represented by an independent candidate.
  • Sikhumbuzo Michael Faku of the ANC in Ward 11 in the Mbizana (Bizana) Municipality – EC443. The party retained the seat.

The new councillor in the by-election which took place in the Free State is:
Thabo Daniel Moloi of the ANC in Ward 1 in the Maluti A Phofung (Qwa-Qwa) Municipality – FS194. The party retained the seat.

The new councillor in the by-election in Gauteng is:
Joseph Bafana Nkosi of the ANC in Ward 88 in the Tshwane Metropolitan (Pretoria) Municipality – TSH. The party retained the seat.

The new councillors in the two by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal are:

  • Reuben Moses Molelekoa of the ANC in Ward 12 in the Newcastle (Newcastle) Municipality – KZN252. The party retained the seat.
  • Bhekuyise Maurice Ndwandwe of the ANC in Ward 5 in the Mthonjaneni (Melmoth) Municipality – KZN285. The party retained the seat.

The new councillor in the by-election that took place in Mpumalanga is:
Sabelo Russon Masuku of the ANC in Ward 28 in the Mbombela (Nelspruit) Municipality – MP322. The seat was retained by the party.

Three by-elections took place in North West. Ward 24 in the Greater Taung (Reivilo) Municipality was uncontested. The new councillors are:

  • Ananias Lenkaletse Noko of the ANC in Ward 6 in the Tswaing (Delareyville) Municipality – NW382. The ward was previously held by the DA.
  • Joyce Malepe of the ANC in Ward 24 in the Greater Taung (Reivilo) Municipality – NW394. The seat was retained by the party.
  • Happy Frans Saudi of the ANC in Ward 7 in the Matlosana [Klerksdorp] Municipality – NW403. The seat was retained by the party.

One by-election took place in the Western Cape. The new councillor is:
Annelise Renata Olivier of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 7 in the Bitou (Greater Plettenberg Bay) Municipality – WC047. The ward was previously held by the ANC.
