The Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Pretoria that out of the six seats contested in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 9 December 2009, the African National Congress (ANC) and Inkatha Freedom Party each won two seats, the Democratic Alliance (DA) one while the last seat went to an independent candidate.
Voter turnout varied between 21.34% and 57.05% with an average of 32.55%.
In Gauteng where one by-election took place, the new councillor in Ward 14 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] – EKU is Agnes Deliwe Ramatje of the ANC.
In KwaZulu-Natal, three by-elections took place and the new councillors are:
David Ian Watson of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 1 in Hibiscus Coast [Port Shepstone] – KZN216
Mcobiseni Patrick Duma of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 6 in Imbabazane [Loskop] – KZN236 and
Isaac Felokwakhe Ndwandwe of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 16 in uMlalazi [Eshowe] – KZN284.
One by-election each took place in Limpopo and the Northern Cape. In Limpopo, an independent candidate, Stephen Gabaetsiwi Lerumo, is the new councillor in Ward 3 in Thabazimbi [Thabazimbi] – LIM361. This seat was previously held by the ANC.
In the Northern Cape, the new councillor in Ward 5 in Phokwane [Hartswater] – NC094 is Mina Magdaleen Gill of the African National Congress.
