The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Pretoria that the African National Congress (ANC) won nine of the 15 seats in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 26 May 2010.
Of the remaining seats, three went to the Democratic Alliance, two to the Inkatha Freedom Party and one to an independent candidate.
Voter turnout varied between 52.34 percent and 26.63 percent with an average of 40.04 percent.
In the Eastern Cape, both by-elections were won by the African National Congress. The new councillors are:
* Zolile Butrosbutros Mboso in ward three of the Amahlathi (Stutterheim) municipality, EC124 and
* Mxolisi Victor Blekiwe in ward 17 of the Lukhanji (Queenstown) municipality, IEC134.
In Gauteng, Dipuo Lillian Mosese of the African National Congress is the new councillor in ward 31 of the Mogale City (Krugersdorp) municipality, GT481.
In KwaZulu-Natal, where six by-elections took place, the new councillors are:
* Dunford Khulekani Msomi of the African National Congress in ward one of the Umzumbe (Umzumbe) municipality, KZN213
* Tjaart Andries Petrus Kruger of the Democratic Alliance in ward 16 of the Hibiscus Coast (Port Shepstone) municipality, KZN216
* Michael Mani Mlaba of the African National Congress in ward four of the Msunduzi (Pietermaritzburg) municipality, KZN225
* Mbongeni Ephraim Mnguni of the Inkatha Freedom Party in ward 15 of the Nqutu (Nqutu) municipality, KZN242
* Mhawukeleni Wellington Sokhela of the Inkatha Freedom Party in ward 11 of the Msinga (Pomeroy) municipality, KZN244
* Bhekani Joseph Blose of the African National Congress in ward seven of the Ndwedwe (Ndwedwe) municipality, KZN293. This ward was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party.
In Limpopo, two by-elections took place:
* Ward seven in Greater Groblersdal (Groblersdal), LIM472 was won by Motiba William Ramphisa, an independent candidate. This ward was previously held by the African National Congress, while
* Ward 18 in Greater Tubatse (Burgersfort, Ohrigstad, Eastern Tubatse), LIM475 was won by Kwenyeni Forche Mkhabela of the African National Congress.
In North West, two by-elections took place which was both won by the African National Congress. The new councillors are:
* Patrick Rampekile Lepule in ward 13 of the Moretele (Temba) municipality, NW371 and
* Peter Ohagiseng Babedi in ward six of the Mafikeng (Mafikeng) municipality, NW383.
In the Western Cape, the Democratic Alliance won both by-elections which took place. Their new councillors are:
* Shehaam Sims in ward 44 of the City of Cape Town (Cape Town), CPT. This ward was previously held by the ANC and
* Catharine Nondumiso Booysen in ward 12 of the Theewaterskloof (Caledon) municipality, WC031. This ward was previously held by the ANC.
