The Electoral Commission (IEC) said the African National Congress won 4 of the 7 municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 25 April 2012. The remaining three seats went to the Democratic Alliance.
Voter turnout varied between 23.73% and 61.66% with an average of 36.61%.
Three (3) by-elections took place in the Eastern Cape.
The new councillors are:
- Mthuthuzeli Ezra Msimang of the African National Congress in Ward 5, Ndlambe [Port Alfred] Municipality – EC105. The ward was retained by the party.
- Isabella Johanna Wagenaar of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 7, Sundays River Valley [Kirkwood] Municipality – EC106. The ward was retained by the party.
- Thozamile Magazi of the African National Congress in Ward 7, Ngqushwa [Peddie] Municipality – EC126. The ward was retained by the party.
One by-election each took place in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. The new councillors represent the African National Congress and in both wards the party retained the seat.
They are:
- Batetiye Brenda Marule in Ward 28, City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB, Gauteng; and
- Fana Enock Nkosi in Ward 9, Albert Luthuli [Elukwatini/Carolina] Municipality – MP301, Mpumalanga.
Two (2) by-elections took place in the Western Cape. The new councillors represent the Democratic Alliance and in both wards the party retained the seats.
They are:
- Siyabulela Mamkeli in Ward 45, City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CPT; and
- Martin Mathews in Ward 11, Theewaterskloof [Caledon] Municipality – WC031.
