Results of the municipal by-elections held

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mr Mosotho Moepya, said in Pretoria today that the African National Congress won seven (7) of the 13 vacant seats in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 14 October 2009. Of the remaining six seats, three (3) went to the Inkatha Freedom Party, two (2) to the Democratic Alliance and one (1) to the Congress of the People.

Voter turnout varied between 30.29 percent and 56.72 percent with an average of 34.11 percent.

In the Eastern Cape, four (4) by-elections took place and the new councillors are:
* Danisile William Mbumba of the ANC in Ward 8 in Ndlambe (Port Alfred) – EC105
* Phumzile Joseph Oliphant of the ANC in Ward 6 in Kouga (Humansdorp) – EC108
* Mnikelo Tempile Siwisa in Ward 4 and Mzoxolo Arnold Goniwe in Ward 14 in Ngqushwa [Peddie] – EC126.

These two wards were uncontested and the new councillors both represent the ANC.

In KwaZulu-Natal, six (6) by-elections took place and the new councillors are:
* Matho Precious Shozi of the ANC in Ward 15 in Umzumbe (Umzumbe) – KZN213. This seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party
* Lindani Maxwell Mlaba of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 3 in Imbabazane (Loskop) – KZN236. This seat was previously held by the African National Congress
* Dudu Renete Ngema of the ANC in Ward 7 in Newcastle (Newcastle) – KZN252. This seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party
* Xolani Jacob Zungu of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 7 in Abaqulusi (Vryheid) – KZN263;
* Masesi Mavis Kunene of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 12 in Abaqulusi (Vryheid) – KZN263; and
* Zamokwakhe David Nxumalo of the ANC in Ward 9 in Ubuhlebezwe (Ixopo) – KZN434.

In the Northern Cape, one by-election took place and the new councillor is:
* John Douglas Havenga of the Congress of the People in Ward 4 in Renosterberg (Phillipstown) – NC075. This seat was previously held by the Democratic Alliance.

In the Western Cape, two by-elections took place and the new councillors are:
* Adam Johan Atkins of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 2 in Swartland (Malmesbury) – WC015
* Alver Henry Ernest Uys of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 11 in Breede Valley (Worcester) – WC025. This seat was previously held by the ANC.
