Results of the municipal by-elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Pretoria that the African National Congress had won 10 of the 14 seats in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 18 November 2009 while the remaining four wards went to the Democratic Alliance.

Voter turnout varied between 23.1 percent and 55.8 percent with an average of 35.48 percent.

In the Eastern Cape where one by-election took place, the new councillor in ward 15 in Umzimvubu [Mount Ayliff] – EC442 is Kileon Nkululo Kwapuna of the African National Congress.

In Gauteng where four by-elections took place the new councillors are:

* André Jurgens van Tonder of the Democratic Alliance in ward three in Midvaal [Meyerton] – GT422.

* Philippus Andries van der Walt of the Democratic Alliance in ward two in Kungwini [Bronkhorstspruit] – GT462.

* Maxwell Mafu Tshangela of the African National Congress in ward four in Mogale City [Krugersdorp] – GT481.

* Esther Molatlhwa of the African National Congress in ward eight in Westonaria [Westonaria] – GT483.

Four by-elections also took place In KwaZulu-Natal and the new councillors all represent the African National Congress.

They are:

* Jabulani Ephraim Mpungose in Ward 20 in Newcastle [Newcastle] – KZN252. This seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party.

* Magangane Malisha Bhekiswayo in Ward 26 in Newcastle [Newcastle] – KZN252. This seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party.

* Mhawukeleni Elphas Mdletshe in Ward 11 in Mbonambi [KwaMbonambi] – KZN281. This seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party
* Graham Cebolenkosi Mfekayi in Ward 12 in Mandeni [Mandeni] – KZN291.

In Mpumalanga, all three by-elections were won by the African National Congress. The new councillors are:

* Ernest Philile Nkosi in ward nine in Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] – MP313
* Ben Nene in Ward 18 in Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] – MP313
* Thembisile Catherine Mkhumbane in Ward 30 in Nkomazi [Nkomazi] – MP324.

Two by-elections took place in the Western Cape and both new councillors represent the Democratic Alliance:

* Babara Rass in Ward 32 in City of Cape Town [Cape Town] – CPT. This seat was previously held by the African National Congress
* Roelof Johannes du Plooy in ward three in Swartland [Malmesbury] – WC015.
