The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr Mosotho Moepya, said in Pretoria today that the Inkatha Freedom Party had won four of the seven seats in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 12 August 2009. Of the remaining three seats, two went to the African National Congress and one to the Democratic Alliance.
Voter turnout varied between 21.55 percent and 66.23 percent with an average of 40.18 percent.
In KwaZulu-Natal, four by-elections took place and the new councillors are:
* Sibusiso Dennis Sokhela of the African National Congress in Ward 19 in Emnambithi/Ladysmith [Ladysmith]–KZN232, this seat was previously held by the Inkatha Freedom Party
* Sicelo Johannes Zikalala of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 6 in Indaka (Waaihoek) – KZN233
* Tolika Amen Mazibuko of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 1 in Okhahlamba (Bergville) – KZN235
* Mjumeli Nicholas Buthelezi of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 5 in Nqutu (Nqutu) – KZN242
* Zamokwakhe Wilson Xaba of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 9 in Umvoti (Greytown) – KZN245
In the Northern Cape, one by-election took place and the new councillor is
* Andries Edward Diergaardt of the African National Congress in Ward 1 in KHâI-MA [Pofadder] – NC067
In the Western Cape, one by-election took place. The new councillor is –
* Barnito Charles Klaasen of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 3 in Witzenberg [Ceres] – WC022
