The Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Pretoria that the African National Congress won eight of the ten municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 5 October 2011. The remaining two seats went to the Democratic Alliance.
Voter turnout varied between 19.56% and 45.28% with an average of 26.97%.
One by-election took place in KwaZulu-Natal. Tanya June de Jager of the Democratic Alliance is the new councillor in Ward four in Newcastle [Newcastle] Municipality – KZN252.
In the nine by-elections which took place in Limpopo, eight went to the African National Congress and one to the Democratic Alliance. The new African National Congress councillors are:
- Tinyiko Daphne Khosa in Ward 11 in Thulamela [Thohoyandou] Municipality – LIM343
- Mafemani Erick Matchebela in Ward 12 in Thulamela [Thohoyandou] Municipality – LIM343.
- Mapule Miriam Hlabioa in Ward 4 in Makhado [Louis Trichardt] Municipality – LIM344.
- Nkhensani Grace Ndzovela in Ward 10 in Makhado [Louis Trichardt] Municipality – LIM344.
- Vhumbani Sarah Luduvhungu in Ward 11 in Makhado [Louis Trichardt] Municipality – LIM344.
- Sipho Masuka in Ward 15 in Makhado [Louis Trichardt] Municipality – LIM344.
- Ananeas Thambatshira Neluvhola in Ward 38 in Makhado [Louis Trichardt] Municipality – LIM344.
- Sello Andries Magowa in Ward 2 in Mookgopong [Naboomspruit] Municipality – LIM364.
The new Democratic Alliance councillor is:
Korny Quintin Dekker of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 31 in Mogalakwena [Potgietersrus] Municipality – LIM367.
This ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.
