The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Pretoria that the African National Congress won nine of the 13 seats in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 5 May 2010.
Of the remaining seats, three went to the Democratic Alliance (DA) and one to the Inkatha Freedom Party. Voter turnout varied between 50.86 percent and 13.12 percent with an average of 29.44 percent.
In the Eastern Cape, Nombuzo Eunice Ngcingolo of the African National Congress is the new councillor in ward seven in Inxuba Yethemba (Cradock), EC131.
In the Free State, Ouma Annah Mokoena of the African National Congress is the new councillor in ward five in Phumelela (Vrede), FS195; this ward was uncontested, while ward 16 in Metsimaholo (Sasolburg), FS204 was won by Hans Jurie Moolman of the Democratic Alliance.
In Gauteng, all three seats went the African National Congress (ANC). The new councillors are:
* ward 78 in Ekurhuleni (East Rand), EKU, Thoko Gladys Radebe
* ward 15 in Randfontein (Randfontein), GT482, Serame William Nawa and
* ward 74 in Tshwane Metro (Pretoria), TSH, Mfana Abram Marobane.
In KwaZulu-Natal where three by-elections took place, the new councillors are:
* ward 10 in eThekwini (Durban Metro), ETH, Gillian Margaret Noyce of the
Democratic Alliance
* ward four in Nqutu (Nqutu), KZN242, Sipho Albert Ngobese of the Inkatha
Freedom Party and
* ward two in Newcastle (Newcastle), KZN252, Elizabeth Johanna Cecelia Cronje of the Democratic Alliance.
In Limpopo, both seats went to the African National Congress with:
* Matome Simon Machethe being the new councillor in ward seven in Greater Letaba (Duiwelskloof). LIM332 and
* Moloko Paul Mehala in ward 11 in Molemole (Dendron/Dikgale), LIM353.
In Mpumalanga and North West, one by-election took place in each province and both seats were won by the African National Congress:
* Ward one in Dipaleseng (Balfour), MP306 was won by Didile Sofia Sitole, while
* Ward 12 in Greater Taung (Reivilo), NW394 was won by Georginah Nontetho
Tafane. This ward was previously held by an independent candidate.
