Results of the municipal by-elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said in Pretoria that the African National Congress (ANC) had won five of the 10 seats in the municipal ward by-elections which took place on 2 September 2009, while two wards went to the Democratic Alliance (DA) and one each to the Congress of the People (Cope), the Minority Front and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

Voter turnout varied between three percent and 58,01 percent with an average of 24,15 percent.

In the Eastern Cape where one by-election took place, the new councillor in ward eight in King Sabata Dalindyebo (Umtata), EC157 Tula Edgar Mapekula of the ANC.

In Gauteng where four by-elections took place the new councillors are:

* Thando Mgaweni of the Congress of the People in ward 12 in Ekurhuleni (East Rand), EKU
* Thokozani Amos Mncube of the African National Congress in ward 13 in Westonaria (Westonaria), GT483
* Kevin Patrick Wax of the Democratic Alliance in ward 18 in city of Johannesburg (Johannesburg), JHB
* Gaborutwe Rachel Malahlela of the African National Congress in ward 76 in Tshwane Metro (Pretoria), TSH.

In KwaZulu-Natal, two by-elections took place and the new councillors are:
* Bradley Singh of the Minority Front in ward 52 in eThekwini (Durban Metro), ETH
* Frederick Masikane of the Inkatha Freedom Party in ward 11 in Umvoti (Greytown), KZN.

One by-election each took place In Limpopo, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape and the new councillors are:
* Jauma Ananius Mogoasa of the African National Congress in ward eight in Lephalale (Ellisras), LIM362, Limpopo
* Elizabeth Olyn of the African National Congress in ward 12 in Khara Hais (Upington), NC083, Northern Cape and
* Dirk Swart of the Democratic Alliance in ward five in Witzenberg (Ceres), WC022, Western Cape.
