The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said the African National Congress (ANC) won two of the three municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 18 January 2012. The remaining seat went to the Democratic Alliance.
Voter turnout varied between 34.16% and 38.67% with an average of 34.97%.
Two wards were contested in the Eastern Cape. The new councillors are:
- Vuyiswa Nthuthu of the African National Congress in Ward 17 in Elundini [Mount Fletcher] Municipality – EC141. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress; and
- Vusumzi Macebo of the African National Congress in Ward 5 in Ntabankulu [Ntabankulu] Municipality – EC444. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.
The by-election which took place in the Western Cape was won by the candidate representing the Democratic Alliance:
- Marita Johanna Petersen is the new councillor in Ward 68 in City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CTP. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.
