Residents warned to prevent veld fires in Mpumalanga

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga, Norman Mokoena has appealed to all residents of the province to be extremely cautious and to avoid situations that can lead to runaway fires as vegetation is dry and flammable and can be fanned by high winds.

“We urge people to make sure that they do not start fires in the open veld, all fires must be controlled, they must make sure that fires are completely put out before leaving that area and they must not throw away burning cigarette stubs anywhere. It also important that those who will be carrying out fire breaks put in place strong control measures and make sure that these fires are strictly controlled and monitored,” said Mokoena.

The department is working with all municipalities to ensure that they are on full alert and standby for any possible fires. Residents are also urged to report any fires as quick as possible to their closest fire brigade or provincial disaster management centre at 0800 202 507.
