The use of regrooved tyres on passenger vehicles compromises safety standards, the lives of passengers and those of other road users, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono warned on Monday.
MEC Mohono has urged North West Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities and other law enforcement officers to be vigilant and to make sure that regrooved tyres are not used by passenger vehicles on public roads.
She appealed to motorists and members of the public to report any person manufacturing and or selling regrooved tyres for passenger vehicles to the National Regulator for Compulsory Specification. Mohono’s stern warning and appeal follows a complaint by an Orkney tyre dealer about the proliferation of regrooved tyres and their use by taxis in the Klerksdorp area.
Regulation 212(1) of the National Road Traffic Regulations 2000 states that, “No person shall operate on a public road, a motor vehicle which is equipped with a regrooved tyre having a bead diameter of 430 millimetres or less.”
Regulation No.1125 of 16 November 2001 also states that regroovable tyres which may be used by commercial vehicles either than passenger vehicles are supposed to be marked “regroovable” on the side walls, thus if a tyre is regrooved but is not marked “regroovable”, it should not be allowed to be used on a motor vehicle whilst being operated on a public road.
