The Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests yesterday adopted the 2013 Register of Members’ Interests. The Committee indicated that of the 454 permanent Members of Parliament required to disclose their financial interests, only 62 failed to comply with the 23 August 2013 deadline for the submission of their financial interests’ declarations.
Fifty-nine (59) MPs submitted after the deadline and three did not submit due to various reasons. Of the three Members who did not submit, two were reported to have missed the deadline as they fell ill before the due date. One other Member missed the deadline as she was suspended on 20 August 2013.
The Committee agreed to give a two-week extension to the three Members whose non-compliance was due to circumstances “beyond their control”. The extension would be from the date these Members return to Parliament.
As part of its recommendation for sanctions, the Committee said it would recommend to the Speaker that the names of the 59 Members be published in the ATC (Announcements, Tablings, Committees report).
