The amalgamation of two of the North West province’s local municipalities, i.e. Molopo and Kagisano will only be effected on the date of the next local government elections in 2011.
This announcement was made by the North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Gordon Kegakilwe during his meeting with councillors and the community of Molopo local municipality, on Friday. The announcement follows a decision by the Municipal Demarcation Board last year on the determination and re-establishment of municipal boundaries.
Kegakilwe said the re-establishment of the municipal two boundaries will have an impact on the number of councillors for the new constituted council. “However, the Minister of Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Sicelo Shiceka, has already determined a formula to be used to determine the number of councillors, ” he said.
He assured councillors and the community of Molopo that the affected municipalities will continue to render services to their communities as expected. He pleaded with councillors to re-assure communities that they will still get the services that they are entitled to.
Kegakilwe also stated that the decision to re-establish the boundaries of the two municipalities was preceded by a series of consultation process through notices inviting public views.
He said that a public consultation process will unfold for the renaming of the newly established council, adding that his department will continue to support the two municipalities throughout the process.
