North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono has called on police to expedite their investigation into a rape case involving a 52 year old woman and whether a nearby tavern believed to be a den from which criminal activities in Molelema village are being orchestrated is licensed.
This came after MEC Mohono visited the 52-year-old rape victim in Molelema village outside Taung on Tuesday.
The victim who has been diabetic for more than 32 years and has mental disorder, alleges that she was gang raped during October by youngsters she believes were from the nearby tavern.
She told the MEC that since her ordeal, the thugs now attacks her family almost every weekend, allegedly after drinking from the tavern.
The inconsolable victim who could not hold back tears requested that her family be assisted to relocate to another area.
"People's safety comes first therefore the legality of the operation of the tavern should be urgently investigated and if it is not operating legally and its existence threatens people’s security, it should be closed down" said MEC.
“My heart bleeds as I come across such cases, especially as we have just observed the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children. Everything should be done to bring the perpetrators to book,” added the upset Mohono.
She requested greater Taung Local Municipality to put burglar proofs on the victim's three-roomed house as an interim safety measure while consideration is given to her possible relocation as per request.
