Raging storms hit Greater Tzaneen areas of Limpopo province

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre has received reports of raging storms that have hit The Greater Tzaneen area of the Limpopo province last night. The Department of Local Government and Housing has since dispatched a team of officials to the affected areas like Burgesdorp, Lenyenye, Tickyline and Gavasa Village. The team is currently doing an assessment of the damage and will prepare a report for the attention of authorities. The report will advise the Department in terms of what needs to be done and possible interventions depending on the severity of the incident.

The preliminary reports indicates that between 150 to 200 families have been affected in one way or another. Some of their homes have been completely destroyed whilst others have been severely damaged. The affected families have been given temporary shelters in community halls whilst others received tents. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the Disaster Management Centre are assisting with the distribution of food parcels and blankets.

With more rain still expected in the area, the MEC for Local Government and Housing, Limpopo, Soviet Lekganyane, as political head of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, calls upon all the people of Limpopo, to be vigilant and take extra caution. He has encouraged all people to report any disaster to the district or provincial disaster management centre on the toll free number 0800 222 111.
