The race towards quality education starts on the first day of the school calendar says North West Premier Thandi Modise

Everyone involved in education should ensure that they not left behind in the starting block because the race towards quality education starts as from the first day of the academic school calendar, North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise said on Wednesday as schools in the province re-open.

Premier Modise said that the marginal but significant sustained improvement in the matric pass rate recorded in 2011 was heartening and should be deepened as it attests to the determination of role-players to contribute towards breaking the cycle of underperformance in the education system, particularly among schools predominantly located in disadvantaged communities.

“The matric class of 2011 has raised the bar in our province and showed us that what is required from all involved in education is that extra determination to ensure that all of our schools turn the corner in pursuit of excellence, ”said Premier Modise.

The Premier said that prioritising education and focusing on the importance of text books, promoting literacy and numeracy as critical and central to learning and reducing the administrative burden on teachers, enabling them to spend more time in the classroom is beginning to bear fruit and should be taken to a higher level this year.

In congratulating those candidates who were successful in the exams and wishing them well in their future endeavours, the Premier thanked all educators, departmental officials, School Governing Bodies (SGB) and parents for their tireless work and wishes to encourage candidates that did not make it not to be discouraged but to work harder towards supplementary exams.
