R600 million for jobs in Gauteng

The Gauteng Infrastructure Development Department (GDID) will spend R600 million over the next three years to ensure efficiency and to attract the best talent in the engineering and construction industry.

MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza said today (Friday) speaking at the prestigious fifth Women in Engineering and Build Environment (WiEBE)  Annual Excellence in Engineering Awards hosted by the University of Johannesburg and Group Five. The ceremony was held at The Venue in Melrose Arch, north of Johannesburg.

“We are rolling-out the Infrastructure Delivery Management System (IDMS). This is to ensure that we modernise and radically transform the delivery of services. Universities and Corporate Companies in the Engineering and Construction must join hands with Government to create opportunities for women empowerment and advancement.

“In this financial year alone we will be spending R150 million in order to ensure that we are an effective implementing agent for infrastructure projects in the province; in this way,  we would be a leading infrastructure provider and facilitator that positions Gauteng as a globally competitive City Region with a sustainable and growing economy,” she said.

She said the department will create a leadership pipeline through which women can be capacitated and developed for upward mobility, including the establishment of programmes for leadership development.

“Government has created enabling legislative environment but true empowerment can only happen if the private and public sector joined hands. We call upon the University of Johannesburg to champion this course beyond the parameters of its own campus. Get your sisters from other universities and we too will get other spheres and government departments,” said Maythula-Khoza.
