North West traffic authorities issued 201 traffic violation tickets to motorists over the weekend bringing to 587 road traffic offenders caught for various traffic violations.
The milestone is part of the month long traffic blitz along the R503 Mafikeng-Lichtenburg road dubbed ‘Operation Moretlwa - Die Poppe Sal Dans’.
No accidents and incidents have occurred along the road since the operation targeted at reckless and inconsiderate road users was launched a week ago. North West Public Safety MEC, Howard Yawa has vowed that his department will hit hard at road users with a passion for speeding until they share the road responsibly with other road users.
262 tickets have thus been issued to road users for speeding, 82 for not wearing seat belts, 94 were arrested for driving without licenses, 16 for overtaking on a barrier line and scores of other for worn out tyres, unlicensed vehicles and overloading.
36 taxis were issued with tickets for driving on wrong routes, eighteen were also issued with tickets for fitted illegal extra seats and their seats stripped and several others for operating without permits. Two government vehicles were also impounded for suspected misuse as driver failed to produce valid route forms.
The operation involves traffic officers from the North West Provincial Department of Public Safety, Ditsobotla and local municipalities and is supported by the South African Police Service.
