R450 000 for Miga Youth Seedling Cooperative

The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will during this financial year, ensure that necessary support is provided to the newly established Miga Youth Seedling Cooperative.

This pronouncement was made by MEC for the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Boitumelo Tshwene, saying four young women and three young men from Miga village outside Mafikeng will be in charge of this cooperative.

Tshwene said this today while presenting his departmental budget vote speech before the North West Provincial Legislature.

He said, Miga Youth Seedling Cooperative as they have been registered will produce fruit and vegetable seedlings and sell them to the neighbouring commercial industries.

The cooperative will not only supply the department with seedlings for its Letsema la Mantshatlala programme, at a cost, but will also use its proximity at its advantage, to supply the neighbouring Botswana farmers with seedlings.

MEC Tshwene further told the house that the project will be implemented over a period of three years. For this financial year, a total of R450 000, will be used for the establishment of the seedling infrastructure. Tshwene also encouraged other government departments to support the project, to ensure its market sustainability.
