Communities staying within 50 kilometers from mining operations and labour sending areas stand to benefit from a R3, 5 billion community empowerment scheme initiated by Anglo American Platinum, the North West Premier’s Coordinating Council was briefed in its meeting held in Taung on Thursday.
Taung is among areas that stand to benefit from the scheme as most residents from the impoverished rural community are employed by Anglo Platinum Platinum (AAP) operations around Rustenburg.
According to AAP Executive Head of Corporate Affairs, Mary-Jane Morifi, OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, Mozambique and Taung were identified as beneficiary communities as labour sending areas after a research commissioned by AAP.
In welcoming Project Alchemy scheme, Premier Mme Thandi Modise said there is a need for engagement with other mining houses operating in the province to ensure that their corporate social investment makes a difference in communities and that beneficiation strategies support provincial, district and local developmental priorities.
The Northwest Power and Conservation Council (NWPCC) agreed that effective and efficient collaboration is necessary to ensure that development initiatives are delivered within the context of a broader national, provincial and municipality development initiatives /strategies.
