R 2, 7 billion needed to address sanitation backlog in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District

An estimated R 2, 7 billion is needed to address sanitation challenges, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality Executive Mayor Phaladi Saku’s outlined in her overview presentation to the Human Settlements Ministerial Sanitation Task Team (MSTT) during its first provincial consultation meeting held with stakeholders in Mahikeng on Monday.

As part of its programme to investigate challenges related to sanitation, inspect unclosed and incomplete toilets and engage with key stakeholders in the province, the team visited the Lomanyaneng sanitation project where they also had a meeting with beneficiaries.

After a lengthy discussion with beneficiaries in a meeting that was held at the Barolong Boora Tshidi Traditional Offices, the Provincial Task Team Chairperson, Ms Nomazotsho Memani emphasised the need to reinforce educational campaign around issues of sanitation within communities in the district.

“It is unsustainable that beneficiaries are unhappy about toilets they are receiving from government despite certain challenges and the fact that there is a laid down criterion that such projects do not meet,” said Memani.

The MSTT led nationally by MP Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was established by Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale in September to advise him on how to deal with the problem of incomplete and uncovered toilets in the country.

The team is mandated to establish the scale of the sanitation problem, its nature and further identify irregularities and malpractices and report back to the Minister by January next year with recommendations relating to policy gaps, legislative short comings, budgetary issues or any other matters.

Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will on Tuesday be part of the team that is expected to visit Haartebeesfontein sanitation project as it proceeds with its programme for the second day of its weeklong provincial visit in City of Matlosana Local Municipality in Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District.
