Queenstown school walked away with a trophy

Working towards a national prize of R2 000 savings plan per learner, a school from each district in the Eastern Cape gathered at the East London Education Leadership Institute in East London to compete in the provincial quiz competition Programme on the 21 June 2012.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) in collaboration with the South African Foundation for Economic and Financial Education (SAFEFE) came up with the questions presented to the learners competing.

This is the 4th consecutive year that the competition has been held. The competition is divided into three sections – the first section, learners discuss and write the answers down on their answer sheet, the second part learners read the question and then hold up a sign either ABC or D, and the third part they read the question and hold up either true or false.

A room filled with anxious excitement, only two schools from their respective districts will move on to the next round and second place goes to Clarendon High in East London. The winner for this year’s provincial quiz competition goes to Maria Louw High School in Queenstown. Queenstown District were the winners and now will compete in a cluster competition against the Western Cape and the Northern Cape on the 13 August 2012.

Maria Louw High School walked away with certificates, a trophy, the school also won a Virtual Economic CD-Rom with 2000 economic lessons, and each learner received a savings plan of R300.

The National Quiz Competition Programme will be held in Bloemfontein from the 7 to 9 September 2012, where the Eastern Cape is so eager to compete. The winning school will walk away with R2 000 savings plan per learner, including their medals and certificates.

Mzimhle Mabona, Acting Chief Director of Curriculum Management gave the learners some good advice for their journey that follows “Moving a mountain starts with one stone at a time. You can do it.”
